Walking, Beer and Oysters!

As the sun is due for an appearance this weekend, why not a take a stroll from Southwold to Walberwick and head for the Beer & Oyster Festival, taking place at the Anchor Pub, Walberswick, on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th August. Start your walk near the Sailor’s Reading Room then head south along the promenade with the sea on your left hand side. Head along Ferry Road, towards the river mouth, then turn right, passing the RNLI Lifeboat Station and rowing-boat ferry. Continue past the fresh fish huts and continue past the Harbour Inn (you can stop in for quick refreshment if you need to!).  From the Harbour Inn, walk alongside the river until you reach the Bailey Bridge – the foot bridge that crosses over the River Blyth and onto the Walberswick side. (This is the old Southwold Railway Bridge). Once you’ve crossed the river, you can either walk along the footpath across the fields, turn left, and take the bridle path back into Walberswick, or follow the riverside path back towards the river mouth. Walk up The Street to the Anchor Pub, and enjoy the delights of their Cask-Beer and Oyster Festival. A charcoal barbeque with local fish and meats will be served from noon until 3pm and a selection of cask ales will be served all day from their flint barn. Live music will be provided by The Jack Pescod Trio. Once you’re ready to return, you can always take the rowing-boat ferry back across the Blyth for a short cut back to Southwold! The Beer and Oyster Festival takes place at The Anchor, Walberswick on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 August, 11am – 11pm.
