The Red House - Britten Pears Foundation

In the year of Benjamin Britten’s centenary celebrations, visitors to Aldeburgh are welcomed to visit The Red House in Golf Lane, where Britten and worked and lived from the late 1950s. 

Visitors can gain a fascinating insight into the life of this celebrated, Suffolk-born composer, by visiting The Studio, where much of his work was written.  One of Britten’s masterpieces: War Requiem, was indeed written here. 

The restoration of The Studio was based on Cadbury-Brown’s original designs.  Today, the layout is presented as it would have looked  in 1958 - before Britten rearranged it in the early 1960s. Many of the composer’s original belongings and “tools of the trade” are still on display within The Studio, including his original piano and desk. 

The Gallery and The Studio at The Red House is currently open to visitors between 2-5pm, Tuesday - Friday (Autumn/Winter hours: October - 20 December. Free entry).

Visitors can book a short break or longer stay at Home Reach, which is situated within the grounds of The Red House. A 50% discount on weekly bookings is currently applicable at Home Reach until 29th November 2013.
