Christmas at Sutton HooWeekends from 30th November - 22nd December 2013, 11am-4pmWeekends at Sutton Hoo during December are filled with festive fun!  Visit Tranmer House which has been decorated for Christmas, replicating how Mrs Pretty’s home may have looked in the 1930s, when she entertained friends and family.

Mrs Pretty was the former landowner at Sutton Hoo. In 1939 she commissioned Suffolk archaeologist Basil Brown to excavate several large and ancient burial grounds present within her estate. What Basil Brown discovered, along with several of Mrs Pretty’s labourers, was one of the greatest Anglo Saxon hoards ever discovered, including a jewel-encrusted purse lid, a beautifully crafted shield, a warrior King’s gold and cloisonné regalia and other priceless treasures. The amazing burial site also included a treasure laden ship which belonged to Wuffinga King Raedwald, who ruled over “Eastern Angles” from circa 617 – 625.

Visitors to Sutton Hoo will not only get to experience Mrs Pretty’s House in festive mode, but can enjoy wonderful walks through the beautiful estate, which affords breath taking views across the River Deben to Woodbridge.
