Hoxne near Eye in the heart of Suffolk is a picturesque village with a fascinating and ancient history. It is in fact the site of one of the largest hoards of Roman treasure ever discovered in the United Kingdom. Legend also claims that Hoxne is where St Edmund was martyred.
Hoxne and the surrounding countryside is perhaps best discovered on foot and a fascinating walking trail entitled Hoxne In the Footsteps of a Saint and a Philanthropist, highlights landmarks of historical and geographical interest.
The trail passes the Swan Inn – a beautiful timber-framed building dating back to the 16th Century. The trail also highlights Hoxne’s Church of St Peter and St Paul which was once the seat of the Late Saxon and medieval bishops of East Anglia.
