5 of Our Favourite “Top 50 Things” in Suffolk

We were delighted to see the results of the “Top 50 Things in Suffolk” survey, featured in the East Anglian Daily Times on 17th March 2014.

Many of Suffolk Secrets' favourites were on the #50ThingsinSuffolk list including these 5:

Peasenhall Pea Festival
Where else but in Suffolk could you find such a peasing (pleasing!) event as the  'Peasenhall Pea Festival'.

Attracting visitors from across the country, this foodie festival features wacky events such as the World Pea Podding Championships, Pea Shooting and the National Pea Eating competition!

Don’t forget to wander around this beautiful village and along its colourful main street where you’ll find an art gallery, village store and Emmett’s - a renowned delicatessen that is rumoured to have once supplied home-cured hams to HRH The Queen Mother!

Historic buildings in the village include The New Inn, a grade II listed building which was formerly a medieval, open hall house and the Ancient House which has façade dating back to the 18th century.

Walk from Snape Maltings to Iken
This walk is one of life’s true pleasures and follows a route from the south eastern corner behind Snape Maltings, over farmland (lookout for the Suffolk Punch sculpture) and onto a boardwalk. The longer route trail leads onto one of our favourite destinations – Iken Cliffs and a sandy bay which nestles alongside the banks of the River Alde. This picturesque “beach” offers some stunning views across to Iken Church and is situated within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB (area of outstanding natural beauty).

Crabbing in Walberswick
Absolutely a favourite with locals, day-trippers and Suffolk Secrets’ customers! Beware – families from Southwold and Walberswick are very competitive in this crustacean sport! You can often see them brandishing their crab buckets about during the summer - filled to the brim with side-scuttling critters!

Eating fish and chips in Aldeburgh
Aldeburgh has 2 fantastic fish and chip shops and both establishments have a cult following from locals and visitors alike. There’s nothing that depicts an English seaside holiday like the vision of people sitting on the beach and chomping on a delicious portion of fish and chips (fighting off giant herring gulls!) Sutton Hoo, Woodbridge
Sutton Hoo is a fantastic and fascinating Suffolk attraction, with an award-winning exhibition centre, a series of beautiful walking trails (with views across the river to Woodbridge), historic costume exhibits (Mrs Pretty’s House) and tours around the burial grounds of an Anglo Saxon King and his ship.

The exhibition tells the fascinating story of the former land owner of Sutton Hoo - Mrs Pretty.  Following her curiosity regarding the presence of a number of large mounds on her estate, she commissioned a local archaeologist to excavate these mounds in 1939. To everyone's amazement, the excavation team uncovered one of the greatest Anglo Saxon hoards ever discovered. This priceless hoard included a beautifully crafted shield, gold and cloisonné regalia and other historic treasures. The amazing burial site also included a treasure laden ship which belonged to Wuffinga King Raedwald, who ruled over “Eastern Angles” (East Anglia) from circa 617 – 625.
