Martello Tower, Shingle Street - the most unusual holiday home in the UK?

Martello Tower AA truly is a unique Suffolk property offering breathtaking 360 degree views from its rooftop, taking in Orford to the north, saltmarsh and reedbeds to the west, and three other Martello Towers and the far-reaching coastline to the south.

Situated in Shingle Street, a tiny hamlet on the heritage coast, Martello Tower AA was built in approximately 1810. It was one in a long chain of Martello Towers built along the south and east coasts of England to defend the country against what was felt to be an imminent threat of invasion by Napoleon. During the Second World War some of the towers were used as lookout posts and a number of soldiers were billeted in the tiny hamlet of Shingle Street. Martello Tower AA at Shingle Street then lay empty for many years but was bought privately in 1972 and converted into a residential property.

Located in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty),  Martello Tower offers a wonderful base for a Suffolk cottage holiday offering ample walking opportunities along the shingle shoreline and through the surrounding countryside. This area is also home to a vibrant wildlife population including herons, egrets, barn owls, fallow and muntjac deer, badgers, foxes and numerous other birds.
