New Year, New Locations

As 2016 comes to an end and a new year is on the horizon, it’s clear to see that Suffolk has some amazing locations for holidays and days out. We’ve been extremely busy recruiting new properties throughout the county and this year we have dived into new land – Clare and Lowestoft! Whilst both locations are on different sides of the map they both offer a great destination for a Suffolk holiday. We’ve out together some facts about each location so have and read and see if these fantastic locations take your fancy!

Clare

Fact 1: Clare is the smallest town in SuffolkIt may be small but it’s packed with fine boutiques, galleries, eateries and pubs.

Fact 2: Clare is historicalRomans, Saxons and Normans have all played a part in the history of the town – it’s thought the name Clare is Roman and was taken after Latin Clarus - meaning ‘illustrious’ or ‘renowned’.

Fact 3: Clare’s Museum is pretty special…The Ancient House Museum is one of the oldest houses in Suffolk and in 1979 was converted into Clare’s Museum. It is a Grade I listed building which is thought to date back to the 1470s. Inside the Museum you can find out the full history of Clare and annual exhibitions which focus on important dates in Clare’s history as well as historical figures.

Fact 4: Clare has a great circular walkClare Walk is a pleasant walk of 3.5 miles in length and begins at the Country Park. The walk should take around two hours to complete but there are some shortcuts making the time a little less! Look out for the public footpath signs.

Fact 5: Clare has close connectionsThere are many interesting destinations nearby to Clare which are well worth exploring. Long Melford is the nearest with its thriving High Street and two stately homes. Bury St Edmunds is also easily accessible being sixteen miles away with its shopping centre, places of interest including the cathedral and Abbey Gardens.

Lowestoft

Fact 1: The most easterly point in the UKNess Point in Lowestoft is the most easterly point in the UK, dating back to the early 19th century. It is thought that Sir Samuel Morton Peto visited Ness Point to mull over his plans for the town in the early 19th century. It is claimed he felt happier knowing that there was nobody further east than he when searching for inspirational ideas.

Fact 2: Lowestoft has a blue flag beachLowestoft beach is a firm favourite amongst families and visitors with its golden sand, beautiful seafront and colourful beach huts. It is also said to have served inspiration to Benjamin Britten’s first works.

Fact 3: There’s a lot to see!Lowestoft has many shops, restaurants, pubs, two theatres and two piers – so there’s plenty for families, couples and friends to discover. Lowestoft also has some of the best fish and chips around.

Fact 4: Lowestoft has the tallest wind turbine in the UKAnother feature residing at Ness Point in Lowestoft is ‘Gulliver’ the wind turbine. The turbine was completed in 2005 and can be seen for miles. Gulliver is capable of producing 2.75MW of electricity which is enough to supply over 1500 homes!

Fact 5: Famous FacesYou’ll pick up a few famous names from Lowestoft. Joseph Conrad came to Lowestoft in 1878 where he joined the Lowestoft fishing fleet. Benjamin Britten grew up in Lowestoft – his former home is now a bed and breakfast. Other names include boxer Anthony Ogogo, musicians The Darkness and actor Karl Theobald.
