Thorpeness was created in the 1900s by Stuart Ogilvie who wanted to create a private holiday haven for his friends and family. Today Thorpeness is thriving with visitors all centred around the magical Meare at the very heart of the village.

1) A Spot of Golf

Yes, golf is extremely popular in Thorpeness with the Thorpeness Golf Club being regarded as the best in the county. Challenge yourself on this 18 hole golf course in a beautiful setting.

2) Explore the Countryside

Thorpeness is surrounded by beautiful countryside which can be explored by foot or by bicycle, making it a great place for all. The Suffolk Coastal Path also flows through Thorpeness which is a popular choice with walkers looking for a challenge. There are some great spots for birdwatching too!

3) Sailing on The Meare

If you’re planning on visiting Thorpeness in the summer season there won’t be shortage of sailing boats dotted along The Meare! This fantastic stretch of calming water was artificially created by Ogilvie who was inspired by the story of Peter Pan. The Meare is open for sailing from late Spring to late Summer and there’s a fantastic tearoom for a treat afterwards. Give it a go!

The beach at Thorpeness is a great appeal for dog-walkers and families. Enjoy a fun day on the beach with a picnic and don’t forget to bring along a kite!
