Down by the River

The Holmes visited Akenfield Cottage, Letheringham earlier this month; they really enjoyed their stay and wrote to us on their return to say: "Great property in a beautiful location with lots to see and do" 

Set on the banks of the River Deben, Akenfield, in Letheringham, is the perfect riverside retreat for anyone who still delights in the adventures of characters such as Ratty and Mole in The Wind in the Willows. Like Ratty you can sit on the riverbank at the bottom of Akenfield's beautiful garden and fish (rods are available) or simply watch the activity in the river.  “There’s nothing––absolutely nothing––half so much worth doing as messing about in boats.”  So if you are feeling like a little activity remember that a rowing boat is moored by the landing stage awaiting your delectation.  Adventure over you can return to your lovely self catering cottage with its wood burning stove and toast your toes infront of the fire.

Literary allusions abound.  The owners' cottage (beside Akenfield) was used for much of the filming of Akenfield, based on the book of the same name by Ronald Blythe This colourful, perceptive portrayal of English country life reverberates with the voices of the village inhabitants and their life almost a century ago.  

Letheringham is a delightful village, and very little changed over the past hundred years. Row down towards the old mill, walk up to the historic church, or make the short journey to Framlingham and visit the castle or to Suffolk coast at Aldeburgh and enjoy fish and chips on the beach and a dip in the sea. Surrounded by charming countryside and reached by pretty country lanes this delightful, detached, Suffolk self-catering holiday cottage is both spacious and utterly contemporary.  Set in stunning gardens it has superb views of the river and woodland beyond. With an abundance of birdlife and plenty of countryside walks nearby, Akenfield is the perfect rural escape.
