Truly Local - Wibble and Wabble to Walberswick

A quiet village on The Suffolk Coast, which has been known to attract celebrities, Walberswick is a delightful spot with great pubs, excellent crabbing and a gorgeous, dune-backed beach. A little quieter than the nearby Southwold, Walberswick has all the elements you could want for a good old fashioned bucket and spade holiday.

Walberswick is a great location for avid walkers, birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts and offers a series of wonderful walks through a “Natural England” managed National Nature Reserve. Walberswick National Nature Reserve includes areas of reed buds – a habitat for many different species of birds, insects, and amphibians. Take the footpath from Walberswick to Dunwich to capture the best views of the Reserve. You can reach Southwold by foot from Walberswick, another scenic route with a landscape like no other. Traipse through the reed beds past historic windmills until you reach the footbridge that takes you over to Southwold Harbour. If you’d rather travel by water, you’ll spot the iconic Walberswick Ferry, which will give your legs a short break.

For bucket and spade days, Walberswick’s wild beach is utterly stunning, and a much quieter spot than Southwold. Black beach huts line this part of the coast along with wild dunes on a shingle and soft sand beach. There’s no better place to create a sand fort, fly a kite and tuck into some delicious fish and chips.

Walberswick is well known for its crabbing competitions and although the official “National Crabbing Competition” has not been running for several years, you will still spot plenty of families with their buckets, line, and bait by the small bridges just off the main riverside car park.

If you’re visiting in the summer months, the traditional village fete takes place in August on the green and promises to be a fun-filled afternoon with various entertainments for all the family. If you decide to visit during springtime the village hosts an Easter egg hunt among the dunes on Easter Sunday.

Although Suffolk Secret’s cottages all have excellent self-catering Situated on the green you’ll find The Bell Inn. This 600-year-old pub serves great food and local, Adnams ale. Perfect for a visit in the winter or summer, the pub offers a large outside seating area and cosy snug areas along with a toasty open fire. We recommend the fish pie, our mouths are watering just thinking about it.
