Wonderful Westleton

It was catapulted into the national spotlight when HRH’s William and Kate stayed at the village pub, the oh-so-quaint (and dog-friendly) Westleton Crown for their first wedding anniversary but for those in the know, Westleton has always had a special draw.

It might be less well-known than some other towns and villages which flank the Heritage Coast, Dunwich to the east, Southwold to the north and Aldeburgh to the south but for those wanting a base from which to explore the Suffolk Coast and Heaths (and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty); to wander through Dunwich Forest and to be within walking distance of RSPB Minsmere, this is THE place to stay.

If you’re an outdoors lover, you’ll enjoy the many walks which surround the village, in particular, the purple heathlands of Westleton Common where, if you’re lucky enough, you can spot the Silver Studded butterfly which is of national importance.  Cyclists too can meander through the quiet lanes or ride through forest which separates the village from the coast.  Alternatively, if you’d prefer to just relax, then there’s also the White Horse Inn where you can sip a pint of Adnams on draught.

The highlight of the social calendar is the annual Barrell Fair in August, where wooden barrels used to be rolled down, then later, up the hill on main street and a winner would be crowned. Now, it’s a celebration with stalls, food and drink, races and the all-important barrel race on the village green.

The enclosed garden can be accessed through the French doors in the conservatory, whilst outside, the quiet lane has footpaths which lead through the heathland an eponymous gorse to RSPB Minsmere just a 45 minute gentle stroll away.

Holly Cottage, Sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms

Recently refurbished, this oh-so-cute brick cottage with oak beamed ceilings and traditional features throughout wouldn’t look amiss in the interiors’ pages of Country Living. Tastefully decorated in pale grey’s and whites, you’ll feel cosy snuggled up in front of the woodburning stove, at the large, wooden dining room table or relaxing in the roll-top bath. Fling open the French doors and enjoy the lawn and garden in the summer sun. In a word, ‘gorgeous’.
