Lavenham, a Harry Potter Film Set!

If you’re looking to visit Lavenham, perhaps the fact that it played a significant part in the making of the Harry Potter films might entice you a little more.

Lavenham was chosen as the location for scenes in Godric’s Hollow, a village that features in the book and film series as the birthplace of both Harry Potter and his wizarding headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. Filmmakers found it to be the perfect location, noting its “ethereal quality”.

Though the film cast were not present at filming, both Harry Potter and Hermione Granger were later added to footage of Lavenham’s streets through computer wizardry!

The filmmakers were able to edit out any modern houses that would ruin the aesthetics of the film digitally.

The buildings of Guildhall and Little Hall also attracted the filmmakers, who chose a Grade I listed ‘de Vere House’ to create the fictional village, where Harry’s parents made their final stand before being slain by Lord Voldemort. The house was immortalised as the backdrop where Harry received his characteristic scar.

The three bedroom, 14th century cottage, was sold for almost £1 million last year.

It has, in fact, become one of the most photographed doorways in the UK, coming second only to number 10 Downing Street.
