We might be three weeks into the school holidays already but Suffolk still has lots to offer in its busy events calendar.
Fancy a trip to the theatre? Southwold Arts Centre plays host to Theatre on the Coast this summer, a series of wonderful theatrical performances produced by Matthew Townshend Productions. With comedy and drama both in the line up there’s something for everyone. Theatre on the Coast runs until 31st August and you can find out more here.
A good firework display always makes for a fun family night out and there’s two fabulous events to ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ about this August. Aldeburgh Carnival takes place from Saturday 17th to Monday 19th August, with the main parade taking place on Monday afternoon. The event closes with the most magical and unique lantern procession and firework display. You won’t find anything like this anywhere else. Following on from that is the Thorpeness Regatta, which takes place on Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd August where you’ll enjoy a lit boat procession on the Meare followed by fireworks.
Speaking of carnivals, Beccles Carnival takes place on Sunday 18th August with a traditional procession through the town, leading to the quay where there’s a variety of stalls, entertainment and live music.
If you prefer something a little more peaceful, why not head to Snape Maltings and join one of their ‘Listening Walks’. These are guided group walks taken in silence, allowing participants to listen to nothing but the beautiful sounds of the marshes and wildlife. A louder experience at Snape Maltings is the ever popular Snape Proms, which continues until 31st August and featured an eclectic programme of musical entertainment from around the globe.
Suffolk Wildlife Trust have a bumper line up of events this summer with something for children of all ages. From ‘Wild Beach’ events at Southwold and Sizewell to camps at Foxburrow Farm there’s something for everyone from beachcombers to bug-lovers.
For a taste of the arts, Raveningham Hall near Beccles is once again hosting the Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail until 8th September. Enjoy a stroll around the grounds of the beautiful hall and admire the talents of many a local artist, followed by refreshments at the estate café.
The list goes on…so much so that you’ll need to make more than just a day of it, and for that you’ll need a holiday cottage to stay in! Suffolk Secrets has a fabulous section of holiday cottages big and small, many of which are offering 10% discount for last minute summer stays.
