With almost two months to go until Christmas Day, our thoughts are turning to the festive season with plans being made for Christmas shopping, Christmas fayres and of course the magical switch-ons that take place to welcome in the most wonderful time of year. So if you are thinking about a winter weekend away, there’s no better time to get into the Christmas spirit and come along for one of the big switch-ons in Suffolk. Here’s our guide to where you can enjoy the lights and festive sparkle this year...

Beccles - 28 November, 2019

Christmas always starts in style in the Suffolk market town of Beccles and this year is no exception. The Christmas Lights Switch-on event will take place on Friday 29th November at 5:30pm and will feature a variety of entertainment and activities throughout the town. Southwold - 30 November, 2019

Southwold Christmas Lights is always a magical festive occasion with the lights switched on in the market square by Santa at 5pm and a variety of stalls to browse and entertainment to enjoy from 3pm. Wrap up warm and enjoy mince pies and mulled wine and get into the festive spirit with the Mayor of Southwold and local councillors who lead carol singing from the balcony at The Swan Hotel.

Felixstowe - 30 November, 2019

Felixstowe welcomes in the Christmas season in a spectacular way with its popular Official Christmas Lights switch-on and Craft Market event which this year will be held in 2019 on Saturday 30th November 2019 at 5pm. The lights will be switched on by the Mayor of Felixstowe from the event stage at the Triangle, Hamilton Road, Felixstowe. Santa’s Grotto, carol singing and live entertainment takes place throughout the afternoon as well as the Christmas market all day on Hamilton Road. A children’s candlelight parade (starting at 4.40pm) leads up to the Christmas Lights switch-on.

The big switch-on in the village of Reydon, just outside the seaside town of Southwold, is always a charming festive celebration. This year’s event at Reydon corner starts at 6pm and includes carol singing, the blessing of the crib and a visit from Santa too.

Aldeburgh - 7 December, 2019

A Dickensian-style Christmas event is planned for Aldeburgh this year to celebrate the Christmas lights in this delightful seaside town. The event will include a new trail, Victorian characters making an appearance on the high street and of course a visit from the big man in red too.

Helmingham Hall - Illuminated Garden Trail

For something a little different, head to Helmingham Hall for its magical illuminated garden trail from 23 November - 8 December. This unmissable event is a lovely way to start the festivities and a chance to see the stunning grounds adorned with thousands of lights and transformed into an enchanted winter wonderland.
