Cycling Holidays
Our ‘sunshine coast’ is home to gorgeous heathland, golden fields, cute-as-pie cottages and more breathtaking views than you can wave a bicycle pump at…
Suffolk Coast and Heaths Cycling Explorer Guides, created with the support of famous brewing company Adnams, feature downloadable maps and information about what you might see plus – of course – details of friendly watering holes where you can quench your thirst en route.
The Dunwich and Minsmere route featured can be extended with a detour further up the coastline to Walberswick – cross the River Blyth there and you’re in Southwold. Or, slightly further south, try the Snape and Orford route where you’ll see concert halls, Cold War weapons-testing buildings and an ancient castle as you ride along mostly minor roads.
For a taste of cycling by fresh as well as salty water, head even further south to Alton Water Park where you can circuit the county’s largest expanse of open water, or set out on a 16-mile ride through pretty villages, including Pin Mill – the Butt & Oyster pub here is a popular resting place.
Take a ride to the end of this peninsular between the Rivers Orwell and Stour and you’ll reach Shotley Gate, where you can enjoy great views of the Port of Felixstowe and catch one of the four foot ferries of the Suffolk coast – the others are at Walberswick, Butley and Bawdsey. Every year these characterful craft enable hundreds of cyclists to explore the region; it’s estimated that by taking the four ferries you’ll save yourself over 75 miles of travel on inland roads.
The perfect way to ease aching muscles post-ride, hot tubs can be hired for use at some of our self-catering properties or a visiting spa company could even tailor a luxurious pamper treatment package to suit your exact requirements… take a look at our Holiday Extras for details.
