Dunwich Holiday Cottages

Our Dunwich cottages offer the perfect base from which to discover the great outdoors. A popular walking trail runs from Dunwich Beach car park, past the eerie ruins of Greyfriars Franciscan Priory and onto the beautiful, National Trust managed Dunwich Heath. This beautiful reserve is home to many wildlife species and birds including ant-lion, adder and the mysterious Nightjar. Also close by is the stunning RSPB's flagship reserve at Minsmere – home of BBC Springwatch 2014.

Dunwich was once the Anglo-Saxon capital of East Angles (East Anglia) and was a thriving port trading in timber, fish and furs. However, in present day, our Dunwich holiday cottages are at the heart of a much sleepier, unspoilt coastal village, set within an area of outstanding natural beauty. Most of the original town of Dunwich was lost to sea due to coastal erosion and a series of severe storms. However, legend says that if you stand on a particular stretch of beach where the original city of Dunwich once stood, you can still hear the tolling of the church bells underwater – although the original church was lost to sea many years ago.

The local museum is just a short stroll away from our Dunwich holiday cottages, and is an excellent place to visit to learn all about this fascinating coastal village. Dunwich offers ample opportunities for a relaxing holiday, including walks along the Suffolk coastal path towards Walberswick and Southwold harbour or a leisurely meal accompanied by live music in the Ship Inn. A local tip

Midday is often “rush hour” at Flora Tearooms next to Dunwich Beach - where you'll often see locals and visitors alike lining up for its legendary fish and chips!
