Stay in Gislingham, Suffolk - Former Viking Settlement

The Farm is a wonderful thatched holiday cottage in the historic Suffolk village of Gislingham. Sleeping four people, it has been thoughtfully decorated throughout and opens out onto a beautiful enclosed garden which includes a stunning medieval well.

Situated in rural Suffolk close to Diss, Eye and Stowmarket, Gislingham is an ancient settlement with a history spanning over 1000 years. Its name came from the Gislingas who were Norsemen (Vikings) that originally landed at Frostenden in a long ship. (Frostenden is now located approximately five miles inland from Southwold, but in Viking times, it was situated right on the Suffolk coast).

In 880AD, Gisli the Viking settled in the village of Gisleham close to the Suffolk Coast, however, one of his sons travelled west into rural Suffolk and settled in Gislingham. Since Viking times, Romans, Saxons and Templar Knights have settled in the village with the Templars perhaps having used Gislingham’s Old Guildhall as a hospice.

Visitors to Gislingham who are interested in the history of the village, should visit St Mary’s Church which dates back to the early 1400s.
