The riverside town of Beccles is a lovely place for a holiday!

Located on the meandering River Waveney and surrounding by rural farmland, Beccles is an ideal place for a short break or longer stay and we have recently listed a beautiful holiday home here called River End Cottage.

This lovely cottage is ideally located for discovering Beccles Quay, the River Waveney and Beccles Marsh Trail - a series of scenic walking paths offering scenic views of the river, farmland, marshland and the historic tower of St Michael's Church.

Many of Beccles' riverside walks form part of the Angles Way - a long distance walking trail that starts near Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, then follows the Waveney Valley through historic market towns such as Beccles and Bungay before finishing in Thetford.

The Beccles to Geldeston trail heads out of town towards Bungay, past Roos Hall - an imposing Grade I listed red brick Tudor manor house rumoured to be one of the most haunted houses in Suffolk, and then crosses farmland before arriving at Geldeston Locks. This is a popular stop for a drink and a bite to eat.

If you fancy a longer distance walk (approximately 10km), head in the opposite direction towards the Quay and take the Angles Way all the way from Beccles, along the River Waveney and onto Oulton Broad. If you time it right you can simply get a train back from Oulton Broad to Beccles station. In the Beccles Quay area you'll find a riverside cafe and a seasonal tourist information centre, which is a great place to pick up a variety of brochures and walking trail maps.

River End Cottage is ideally located close to the town centre, several supermarkets and lots of lovely shops.

Just a short stroll away you'll find the Beccles Museum which offers some fascinating exhibits that relay the town's past and provides information about Beccles' former heyday as an important port with a thriving herring industry. You'll find Beccles Museum in a beautiful 16th century building called Leman House - which is located between the Anglian and Roman Catholic Church in a street called Ballygate.

Beccles is located in a lovely postition at the entrance to the Broads National Park on the county border of Suffolk and Norfolk. Due to its proximity to Norfolk (literally on its doorstep!), it's also a convenient base for day trips to Norwich - which is approximately 25 minutes' drive away.

Beccles has a weekly market in the town centre on a Friday, an outdoor lido and a seasonal quayside tourist information office. It also offers many (seasonal) water-based activities including canoeing, rowing or hiring a motor-powered boat. You can also take a trip to Geldeston Locks via the Black Dog Ferry which operates from the Beccles Lido (outdoor swimming pool) during the summer months.

Also worth a visit is the Church of St Michael’s. In the mid-1700s Lord Horatio Nelson’s parents were actually married in Beccles at this very church. St Michael’s imposing bell tower, which stands independently from the church, is a Grade I listed building and stands at a height of over 96 feet. The bell tower is actually open to the public during the summer months, and visitors can climb the hundreds of steps to the top which affords breathtaking views of the beautiful Waveney Valley, river and beyond.
