If you’ve never been to Snape Maltings before, or have not been for a while, a trip to this wonderful haven of tranquillity and arts has to be on your ‘to do’ list during your Suffolk cottage holiday. Home to the world famous Snape Maltings Concert Hall and an array of boutique shops, galleries and eateries, Snape Maltings sits on the banks of the River Alde, just a short drive from the coastal town of Aldeburgh.
Lots has changed at Snape Maltings recently as it was bought by Aldeburgh Music in 2015. There’s a new Visitor Centre, which can be found in the outer foyer of the Concert Hall where you can find out about what’s on, where to eat, walks and wildlife and even public transport timetables.
A new addition to the wonderful collection of places to eat, the Concert Hall Café opened this month. It serves tea, coffee and pastries, a lunch menu with an emphasis on fresh, healthy salads and a brunch menu at weekends. It is open every day through the summer until the start of October, Monday – Saturday 10am–5.30pm, Sunday 10am–4.30pm, and until the end of concerts on concert nights.
Perhaps the most exciting addition to the Maltings is Myriad. A brand new sculpture by artist David Rickard and architect Germano Di Chello, has been recently installed on the Henry Moore Lawn and was officially opened on 4th June. Myriad holds an array of mirrors, reflectors and periscopes high above visitors’ heads, bringing views over the surrounding landscape down to earth. Intriguing and baffling to the eye this clever creation is fascinating for children and adults alike and is a great addition to the ever expanding collection of sculptures at Snape Maltings.
Now is the perfect time to take a trip to Snape Maltings. The Aldeburgh Music Festival is in full swing, offering an eclectic programme of concerts, workshops, walks and talks to suit all musical tastes.
