Five Reasons to Visit Suffolk this Autumn

Summer might almost be over, but there’s no need for the winter blues just yet. An autumnal Suffolk is a beautiful place to be. After a long summer, Suffolk takes a deep breath and relaxes after entertaining its guests. The sun is still shining, however, there is a sense of calm in the air. The Suffolk countryside changes as the trees transform into an array of reds and golds, the air fills with smells of pumpkins and bonfires and the nights begin to draw in. Suffolk is just as lovely in autumn as it is every other season with lots of things still to do in a picturesque setting. We would like to share with you five wonderful events that are taking place over these autumnal months, hoping that you’ll visit us either for the first time or once again.

Grand Henham Steam Rally, Henham Park

September 16th - 17th

This steamy event isn’t just about steam engines, there are vintage vehicles, performance rings, craft marquees, live music and avenues of trade stands. The Len Murray Arena will be host to acts such as The UK’s number one monster truck team, Big Pete Ltd, and The Wymondham Falconry display team, where birds of prey will be demonstrating their impressive skills as they soar over the heads of punters. They’ll be an array of foods and drinks available at the event, as well as a vintage fair ground and the Kids Corner. Although offering lots of entertainment, the real aim of the event is to raise money for three charities that include Clinks Care Farm, Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund and the Sandra Chapman Centre at the James Paget Hospital. Not only will attending result in a fantastic day out, but you will also be funding some great local causes!   

The Grand Henham Steam Rally can be enjoyed by all ages, so why not take a trip as a large group and stay in the grand, Park Farm House, a beautiful home located on Henham Park’s grounds. 

High Tide Festival, Aldeburgh

September 12th - 17th

Make way for the 11th annual High Tide Festival. Located on the beautiful Suffolk Coast, Hightide is a selection of new plays and a celebration of art. The productions are world premieres, relating to the here and now, and include talks, plays, comedy, cabaret and much more. High Tide is proud of their diverse acts in terms of ethnicity, political philosophy and socio economic backgrounds and provides a platform for new performances to begin and then thrive. This year, High Tide will be adding a brand new temporary venue to their series of stages, a 360, architecturally striking performance space which can be found on Aldeburgh beach.

The Woodbridge Shuck Shellfish Festival

September 29th - October 1st

Woodbridge speaks for itself, with a vibrant town centre, an abundance of wonderful restaurants and a beautiful quayside, it is a sought after destination. The town is once again hosting its annual shuck festival and as the town comes even more alive, a celebration of seafood and shellfish takes place over the weekend that brings us into October. The main event is held at Whisstocks Quayside. With a newly developed Woodbridge Waterfront, an array of scrummy fresh foods and drinks can be tested by enthusiasts in an idyllic location. Resturants around the area will also be cooking up some fishy storms as they join in with the celebration, concocting dishes with recipes created especially for the event.  

Located in the heart of Woodbridge, Beresford House is an impressive holiday home with beautifully bright rooms and lots of character. An ideal base for groups or families wanting to enjoy the full Shuck Festival weekend. 

Aldeburgh Documentary Festival

October 23rd - November 5th

The 23rd Aldeburgh Documentary Festival takes place at the beginning of November this year, showcasing world-class documentaries and talks from the likes of Nick Robinson and Asif Kapadia. Kapadia, a renowned and talented film maker, known for his extremely successful 2015 documentary “Amy”, will be presenting extracts from his documentaries including the yet to be released, “Maradona”. Along with fantastic documentaries, the venue in which they are shown is first class. Aldeburgh cinema can be found along Aldeburgh High Street. A building that has been a picture house since 1919, it oozes character. It is a pleasure to attend the auditorium with it being run by the community and funded as a charity.

Why not make the most of the Doc Fest and stay in our cosy coastal retreat, 65 King Street. This refurbished fisherman’s cottage is just off Aldeburgh High Street and only one street away from the beach. 

Navi - The King of Pop at Spa Pavilion Theatre, Felixstowe

October 13th

Regarded as the world’s number 1 Michael Jackson tribute artist, Navi, hand-picked by Michael himself, will be rocking Felixstowe’s world as he performs at the Spa Pavilion Theatre this October. This incredible show is sure to be a thriller and will include Michael Jackson’s lead guitarist, who joined him on three world tours and worked alongside Michael for 10 years. Offering a fantastic night out, this concert is sure to get the audience out of their seats and shaking their bodies down to the ground to a selection of Michael Jackson hits. Guests will remember the time Navi made them feel like they were not alone. Opening in 1909, the Spa Pavilion is an iconic venue which was recently taken over and reopened in 2015, creating a wonderful space for holiday makers and locals to enjoy some fantastic shows.
