Over the years, Walberswick has been transformed from a bohemian retreat for artists and writers into a popular holiday resort. However, its quirky charms and quintessential “Englishness” still remains today making it a wonderful destination for a short break, day trip or longer stay.

What is Walberswick like?

This former fishing village can be found across the river from Southwold and has a traditional village green, quaint tea rooms, two local pubs, ancient church ruins, a nature reserve and an abundance of walking trails. There is no direct vehicle access between Southwold and Walberswick via the River Blyth. However, travel between the two is great fun either via private boat, rowing boat ferry (peak season only), or on foot via the Bailey Bridge. The Bailey Bridge which is located very close to our harbour-side cottages, used to form part of the old Southwold to Halesworth Light Railway.

Walberswick has a small village store for essentials like eggs, milk and bread. If you prefer to eat out, both the Anchor and The Bell offer an excellent menu and both pubs are family-friendly. This lovely village offers visitors a peaceful stay amongst beautiful scenery with the added benefit of being within easy access of the many Suffolk attractions. What can I do in Walberswick?

Walberswick is a great location for avid walkers, birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts and offers a series of wonderful walks through a “Natural England” managed National Nature Reserve. Walberswick National Nature Reserve includes areas of reedbeds – a habitat for many different species of birds, insects, and amphibians. Take the footpath from Walberswick to Dunwich to capture the best views of the Reserve. Why not stop off at Dunwich and explore its shingle beach and wander through the heath and forest to the National Trust reserve before heading back to Walberswick.

Walberswick is also well known for its crabbing competitions and although the official “National Crabbing Competition” has not been running for several years, you will still spot plenty of families with their buckets, line, and bait by the small bridges just off the main riverside car park.

If you’re visiting in the summer months, the traditional village fete takes place in August on the green and promises to be a fun-filled afternoon with various entertainments for all the family. If you decide to visit during springtime the village hosts an Easter egg hunt among the dunes on Easter Sunday.
