It's unusual name is taken from the Parish of Shotley which can be found at the south-eastern tip of the peninsula. What can I do in the area?
Wherever you chose to stay in the Shotley Peninsula, there are many neighbouring towns and villages to explore. Freston, for one, can be found near the banks of the River Orwell. Its most well-known feature has to be the magnificent Freston Tower which is a six storey Tudor folly.
If you want to purchase some locally sourced produce or are looking for a tasty lunch or afternoon tea, the Suffolk Food Hall in Freston is a must! This award-winning food hall offers a great selection of fresh fruit and veg, locally caught fish and locally-reared meat and poultry. The Suffolk Food Hall complex also has an onsite kitchen store, garden centre, children's play area, restaurant, fishmongers and a cookery school – so it's a great place to visit with all the family! Nearby at Wherstead, you'll find Jimmy's Farm – an excellent family attraction with nature trails, an onsite butchery and farm shop. Jimmy's Farm – owned and run by TV chef Jimmy Doherty – also hosts some fantastic food and drink-themed events throughout the year.
Just north of the Shotley Peninsula and across the River Orwell, you'll find Felixstowe which is the perfect place for a seaside holiday. Stroll along its beach-hut lined promenade and discover an interesting mix of shops and boutiques along its high street. Enjoy great days out with all the family at its seafront amusements or spend hours making sandcastles on the beach. There are plenty of places to visit nearby such as Landguard Fort or Trimley Marshes.
Shotley Peninsula has a selection of beautiful and peaceful villages to relax and unwind in including Chelmondiston and Pin Mill – famous for its excellent riverside pub - The Butt and Oyster. Stutton is also a peaceful and traditional village and you'll find a range of windsurfing and sailing opportunities nearby at Alton Water Park.
