The Shotley Peninsula is one of our favourite places - our very own Suffolk Secret! Located within an area of outstanding natural beauty, it has bendy roads that wind their way around the estuaries – life has to be taken at a slower pace here which is just perfect for a relaxing break. Chelmondiston is a pretty thriving village with a good variety of local shops and wonderful National Trust walks throughout nearby Pin Mill and the surrounding area. Pin Mill’s The Butt and Oyster pub has a great riverside setting and is a great place to relax and watch the world go by.
Stutton is a peaceful traditional village situated in and surrounded by farming country. Close to the village lies the Alton Water Reservoir which is popular for windsurfing and sailing.
Freston is located right on the River Orwell on the Shotley Peninsula. Just a couple of miles south of Ipswich, Freston’s most famous landmark is the Freston Tower, a six storey Tudor folly that looks out over the Orwell. For some delicious and locally grown holiday supplies, a visit to the award-winning Suffolk Food Hall is a must! Its food hall offers a huge variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, sustainably caught fish and locally-reared meat and poultry and there is a kitchen store, garden centre and onsite restaurant with views over the river.
Shotley itself is located at the end of the Shotley Peninsula where the River Orwell meets the River Stour. From Shotley Gate there are views across to Felixstowe and you can watch giant cargo ships being loaded up before they head off to other ports all over the world. From Shotley Gate, you can stroll around Shotley Marina followed by a visit to the HMS Ganges Museum.
