7 Wonders of Woodbridge

Woodbridge is one of Suffolk’s most treasured market towns. With the likes of the town centre having an abundance of independent shops, the water-front hosting restaurants with beautiful views and countryside offering picturesque walking trails, it is an excellent place for day visitors or people wanting an extended stay. There’s so much to do in the pretty town that we thought we’d share with you some of our favourites.

Sutton Hoo Considered one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time, Sutton Hoo is an outstanding historical site. Here, history enthusiasts can discover the awe-inspiring Anglo Saxon burial site where lie our East Anglian ancestors! One of the most impressive parts of the site is the ship burial ground which was discovered in the 1930’s and is one of the largest archaeological finds ever recorded. Sutton Hoo also has an award-winning exhibition in which they have created a full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber. The site is now in the capable hands of the National Trust and the countryside surrounding the attraction is beautifully maintained and a pleasure to walk around. The site also offers a café with local, seasonal food, a gift shop and a second-hand bookshop, along with plenty of activities running throughout the year for children. -

Woodbridge Thoroughfare Why not take a walk down Woodbridge Thoroughfare? The iconic street is lined with characteristic buildings and is host to many local establishments including pubs, restaurants, cafes, shops and bakeries. The street is only a few meters wide which  -creates a buzzing atmosphere where people can wave at each other from one window to another. 

The Crown When walking along the thoroughfare, guests of Woodbridge will stumble across the outstanding gastropub, The Crown. Whether you’re eating, drinking, or even staying at The Crown, you’re sure to experience excellent service and fantastic food in a beautiful setting. They have outdoor or indoor seating options, depending on your preference and a full children’s menu. They often have events on including many jazz and wine tasting evenings and on the first of every month are the very delicious Steak Nights. 

Woodbridge Tidemill One of the first and the last working Tidemills in the country, The Woodbridge Tidemill Living Museum is an excellent place to go and learn about some local history whilst visiting Suffolk. Recently being restored and opened to the public, it is now a fully working mill and is a fascinating piece of machinery to watch and learn more about. The museum has many areas to discover including The Stone Floor and The Pit Floor, and many activities for children to enjoy whilst being educational. You can even purchase the Tidemill’s flour from a number of local shops in Suffolk. 

Walks on the River Deben

There are many routes available to walk along the River Deben, all of which are expeditions across beautiful Suffolk countryside. Whether you’re a keen hiker or just wanting a leisurely stroll, there are trails suited for all. Walkers can enjoy waving to boats as they drift by and spotting an abundance of wildlife that calls the River Deben home. For more information on Riven Deben walking routes, click here.

The Woodbridge Shuck Shellfish Festival

Running from the 29th of September to the 1st of October, The Woodbridge Shuck is an annual event which is set to encourage the consumption of local, quality and seasonal foods. An ideal opportunity to view Woodbridge Waterfront in all its glory, the area will be filled with stalls, music and seafood outlets, along with participating restaurants opening their doors with special menus to collaborate with the festival weekend.

The Riverside Theatre and Cinema

The Riverside Theatre and Cinema in Woodbridge is a charming establishment where visitors can enjoy excellent pickings of quality performances in a classic theatre setting. Located next to the River Deben, the cinema has an adjoining restaurant which serves Michelin standard food and homemade bread and pasta. To top it all off, customers can even take their drink into the screen with them once finishing their meal.

Jasmine Cottage is a cosy Victorian home for two with a generously sized bathroom and quirky original features. The pretty front garden provides a welcoming entrance to the property and the rear patio area with adjoining French doors to the kitchen diner is a wonderful area to unwind.

Lovingly restored by the owners, Beresford House is a beautiful holiday home for seven with incredible woodwork and craftsmanship throughout. The home can be accessed from Woodbridge Thoroughfare, putting it in an incredible location. The house is found on the first and second floor of the building. The open plan kitchen, dining room and lounge lead onto the balcony which has tremendous views over Elmhurst Park and Sutton Hoo’s ship burial ground.

Located along a private lane, Little Doric is in the centre of Woodbridge. Welcoming two guests and a furry friend, should the party wish, it is a great bolt hole with comfortable furnishings. The perfect place to relax after days exploring Woodbridge and Suffolk.
